Is the trucker shortage a real thing? Or has the average pay not increased enough to attract drivers to this admittedly hard and thankless job?
Driver pay has not increased enough, that much is obvious. After years of stagnation it needs at least 10% increase across the board to normalize. Preferably 20%. With freight rates depressed, we don't expect wage increases for the short term.
Long term, however, it's either higher wages or tight capacity. Car shipping rates have seen a normalization from last years spike as well. Add in the slow down of the new car sales and production, we very likely won't see company profitability increase wages in the near term.
